I was surprised and pleased to receive a commission for a new house, near Memus, at the foot of the Angus Glens, a decade after designing the house pictured (Aucleish), for the same client.
Domestic architecture has its own unique challenges. Often negotiation with the Local Council can be difficult, when client priorities, can naturally, differ from those in authority.
Welcome exposure to design language and concepts through the media, can stretch budgets. And of course couples don’t always agree. Fortunately at Wester Auchleuchrie, my client is well informed, realistic, and open to suggestion. The site, secluded and adjacent to a river, evokes the same exclamation of envy from all who visit, from the groundworkers to the Engineer.
As at Aucliesh the client has again looked for a modern take on Scottish vernacular; and currently we are in the process of designing the ‘carbon neutral’ heating system.
"We knew just what we wanted for our new house and David's experience with the Planners has been invaluable. Furthermore his professional knowledge and contacts with other consultants, such as engineer, surveyor etc, means that we can leave him to deal with the every day issues whilst we concentrate on the design.
Building Regulations are apt to conflict with one's ideas and David has shown great expertise in suggesting how even small changes can make a design comply with legislation and still please his clients."
